Motherhood And Back Pain

I’ve been very fortunate to be able to work with my patients throughout all stages of their motherhood – starting from the pre-natal period (providing pain-relief in a safe and gentle manner) to post-natal period (ensuring that their optimal level of function is restored after delivery).  As moms enter the exciting stage of expecting a new baby, this excitement may be curtailed (briefly!) with an air of concern in her voice asking: “Why am I experiencing discomfort in my low back/neck/shoulders during pregnancy when I’ve never even had these concerns in the past?”   You may even identify with this question since you are definitely not alone.  A study in the journal Orthopedics reports that 50 to 90% of pregnant women will most likely experience back pain.

Why are these statistics so high?  Let’s take a brief look at the major biomechanical and physiologic changes occurring at different points of motherhood that may manifest as back, hip, neck, shoulder or neck pain:

The Key to Pregnancy Wellness in Edmonton, Alberta

Our clinic prides itself on offering safe and comprehensive natural health care solutions to support a more comfortable pregnancy, birth, and motherhood.

You don’t have to be in pain to benefit from our care at our clinic.  Smooth gliding joints and relaxed muscles are essential in supporting a healthier pregnancy and labour.  We help to alleviate the added stress on the spine and related structures that accompanies pregnancy-related weight gain and postural changes.   Furthermore, baby in-utero also becomes better equipped to thrive and achieve optimal birthing position when their surroundings are in balance and function at their potential

Establishing pelvic balance and alignment is another reason to obtain chiropractic care during pregnancy. When the pelvis is misaligned it may reduce the amount of room available for the developing baby. The uterus can be envisioned as a balloon being tethered by 8 ligaments – 4 of which can greatly affect the position of the uterus because they attach to the pelvis, including the 2 round ligaments in front on each side of the uterus and the 2 Utero-sacral ligaments behind the uterus. When the pelvis and sacrum become misaligned or don’t glide freely, the ligaments may become strained depending on the pelvic rotation and can act to “twist” the bottom of the uterus. This
twisting is called “intrauterine constraint” and can cause positional issues with the baby including breech, transverse, asynclitic head position (neck is flexed to side which can cause longer labors) and posterior babies (back labor). So keeping the pelvis aligned can help give a breech or transverse baby room to turn, help baby lay on the left side, and can help shorten labors by an average of 30%

Whiplash happens when the soft tissues of the neck are injured by a sudden jerking of the head during a car accident.  The neck is forcefully moved and pain in the neck, arms or headaches can start.  Other causes of whiplash may be roller coasters, or sports injuries.

If you have been in a motor vehicle accident, treatment should begin as soon as possible to avoid long-term problems.
